Overview

During my time at Globus Medical/NuVasive Inc., I worked in the customs device team and on the prone patient positioner. Both roles required a thorough understanding spinal anatomy, pathologies, and user experience. The customs team was a fast-paced role that required a deep understanding of manufacturing techniques, and the ability to produce tangible solutions from varied design inputs. The prone patient positioner was an ambitious project that required many labs, hours of designing, and thorough testing. I was awarded patent US20230270428A1 for work on this project.

Prone Positioner:

  • Designed a patient-positioning system for prone lateral surgery from conception to launch.

  • Utilized anthropomorphic data and surgeon input to design ergonomic patient-positioning system.

  • Designed and iterated several mechanisms within the larger assembly including the bolsters, straps, and lifting mechanism.

  • Nominated for internal design of the year award for work on this project.

  • Performed extensive strength calculations and FEA evaluations to validate potential design strength.

  • Applied extensive GD&T to accurately and appropriately dimension mating assemblies.

  • Created impaction test sensor setup using Arduino, and a MATLAB data analyzer which informed future designs. Designed extensive lifecycle testing to validate assemblies throughout the patient positioner.

  • Performed and organized verification activities with design surgeons.

  • Prototyped 6+ unique patient fixations concepts. Leveraged manufacturing, regulatory, and mechanical knowledge to determine best option moving forward.

Customs Engineer:

  • Designed 100+ unique customized surgical instruments including retractors, inserters, and trials under tight time constraints.

  • Led group of engineers including creating timelines, and delegating tasks.

  • Created complex instruments from surgeon feedback while navigating regulatory, quality, and material limitations.

  • Applied DFM concepts to create machinable instruments in conjunction with internal and external vendors.
